Virus Detection and Prevention Tips

There are four areas of safe conduct that are essential when trying to avoid virus contraction and irreparable damage.

Downloads
You should avoid downloading any files from individuals or companies that you are not well familiar with or look untrustworthy. Go to the extra step to make sure that the publisher is a reputable one.

Email
Do not participate in chain email letters. Those are ripe for virus infection. Do not open any files attached to an email from sources you are not familiar with. Do not open any files attached to an email unless you know exactly what they are. This is even if they appear to come from a dear friend or someone you know. Remember, some viruses can hijack address books and spread themselves using unsuspecting user’s pc. If you are unsure about certain attachment from your friend, instant message your friend asking if they really sent the attachment. One way to spot these emails is the somewhat generic nature of the text such as: “Hello, here is the attachment you asked for”. This is something your friend would not probably write.

Protection
Scan your pc and find out if you have a virus. Then purchase an antivirus software to procted your machine. Update it regularly. Hundreds of new viruses are discovered each month, so you'll want to stay protected – run your Scan every month.

Back ups
Back up your files on a monthly basis. If you fail at protecting your pc and a virus destroys your files, at least be smart by having a back-up copy or your important files, family photos, etc... You should store your backup copy in a separate location from your work files, one that is preferably not on your computer. External hard drives are an excellent way to do so. Please visit the Back Up Center to learn more.
