The simplest way to make sure you will be protected by windows update is to choose the “Automatic (recommended)” option. This option will make sure your computer will download and install updates as soon as they are available.

Note that you can specify a day and time when those updates should be installed. I would recommend you leave the day option to “every day” (you don’t want to delay fixing or protecting your system). When it comes to time, you could specify any convenient time when you’re not normally using your computer.

The downside to Windows update is that it is, as its name implies, a Windows update and not a complete update solution to any software that runs on your pc.

Luckily the good folks at Microsoft understood that Windows update is not enough and there is a need for a more complete solution for updating software on your pc.
Microsoft Update.
Microsoft has recently come out with a new service called “Microsoft Update”.

This service combines Windows updates, Office updates and other Microsoft applications updates all in one convenient service.

By using this service you will get an umbrella of auto update services that will cover many of Microsoft´s software products.

Although this solution is not enough since it only covers Microsoft products it is still a step in the right direction.

To sign up for this free service go to:

http://update.microsoft.com/microsoftupdate

I highly recommend that you give this service a try because this could mean the difference between a safe system and a system waiting to be hacked.
