Broadband Internet Access

In home networking, "broadband" usually refers to high-speed Internet access using this transmission technique. Both DSL and cable modem are common broadband Internet technologies. So-called broadband routers and broadband modems are network devices that support both DSL and cable.

Before You Subscribe to Broadband Internet Service

Broadband Internet services (specifically cable modem and DSL) bring high-speed Internet connectivity to homes and small businesses. Millions of people already subscribe to broadband Internet, but millions more do not. Are you one of those "on the fence" and not sure whether broadband is right for you? Consider the factors below when making your decision.

High Speed
Cable and DSL broadband Internet service provide greater network bandwidth than alternative forms of access. Listening to streaming audio and surfing Web sites becomes smoother with these "high speed" connections. Your ability to multitask may also improve, as you can download security patches, application upgrades and other large files in the background and still have enough bandwidth for more interesting activities.

DSL vs. Cable Modem Comparison
When evaluating cable and DSL services, consider the following:

  • Speed - One of these technologies boasts faster speed than the other in theory. However, that technology may not deliver on the promise in everyday use.
  • Popularity - In the U.S., one of these services enjoys significantly greater popularity than the other. Can you guess which one? Outside the U.S., the answer may be different.
  • Customer Satisfaction - Even if a technology is popular, customers may be unhappy with it.Indeed, in the U.S. the more popular broadband technology rates lower in customer surveys than the other.
  • Security - Cable and DSL implement different network security models. Are both of them secure enough?

Finally, over the years, readers have contributed their opinions on this topic to our message board. Be sure to consider their suggestions, too:

What Is the General Consensus - Cable or DSL?
The variation of reliability from the providers makes your question difficult to answer.

Comcast touts speeds 3 times faster than DSL... I just switched from SBC DSL that was over 700kbs. because I'm very close to the switching station, but Comcast is only 809kbs ! barely 10% faster.

Your choices of both Cable and DSL are limited due to what;s available in your location.

Bottom line...both are WAY better than dial-up !
