Select Safe Sites
Make sure you do not visit websites with many pop ups and banners. Those are usually susceptible to accepting money from spyware vendors.
Be Selective About Downloads
Do not download software of any kind from untrustworthy sites. If you do, usually that spyware has virtually unlimited access to your pc and can begin downloading all kinds of other malicious programs.
Peer to Peer Networks
Any software you download is a potential carrier. Peer-to-peer file-sharing programs are notorious for disseminating Spyware and Adware. If you or your kids are trade music or movies online, it can be A, illegal B, harmful to your computer.
Screensavers, Games, Messenger Icons, etc…
Do you know why those are free? Because they usually carry spyware and adware in them to your pc. You should never download them unless they are from a trusted site.
Adult sites.
Next to peer to peer networks this is the most dangerous category for contracting spyware of adware on your computer. If you visit such websites, you need to be extra careful of all pop ups, links and downloads. The chances of receiving spyware is extremely high.
If you wish to be more detailed, you may read the End User Agreements or Terms of Use on websites you visit. Terms like “Third party software” or “Ad supported” are generally red flags. However we realize it is tedious to do so. Therefore, adhere to safe conduct rules above and you’ll avoid a lot of problems.
Misleading Window Boxes
There are pop ups that may look like standard Windows dialog box. Well, they are not, they are just designed that way to mislead you into clicking on them. It’s an advertisement. Many of them have the same functionality whether you click Yes or Cancel. Therefore, you should always close them in the X box at the top right corner.
Some sites open more browser windows when you attempt to close them. In that case, simply click CTR – ALT – DEL and then End Program in the Task Manager.
E-Mail Threats
Email poses a very certain way into your pc for an attacker. They use other people’s machines to send emails that look like emails from your friends or even official looking emails that ask you to enter your login information into your credit card or bank site. However, it is a fake site at which they collect your login information and then use it on your regular bank or credit card account.
You should never access your bank account from an email. You know the login url. Go to it directly.
Most importantly, always be informed about your pc. Make sure you are protected.
