When testing your Internet speed, your bandwidth is being measured. Its speed may be affected by being located performing other downloads and this test simultaneously, using Skype or other VOIP applications while testing, or executing programs that use your bandwidth to monitor other resources.
Download vs. Upload
Download test measures your connection speed for viewing Web pages or downloading content such as songs or movies; the upload test measures the speed for maintaining them--or sending data over your connection (mailing photos, attachments, etc…). Download times are generally much faster than upload times.
